Jen Twitter The Titano could wear that T-rex as a shoe!
~ Jen[1]

The Titanosaur (tye-TAN-uh-SAWR-us[2]) is one of the Creatures in ARK: Survival Evolved. It is the single largest creature in the game, towering over even the Brontosaurus and the Giganotosaurus. it is so large, the dinosaur will render into the game far before other resources, trees and animals do.

The Titanosaur is a humongous beast but there is a downside to it: once tamed it doesn't eat, so it will live until it starves to death.

Basic Info

Dossier

This section is intended to be an exact copy of what the survivor Helena Walker, the author of the dossiers, has written. There may be some discrepancies between this text and the in-game creature.

NoteHelena
Wild

Today I witnessed an unforgettable sight: the extremely rare Titanosaurus Vagacastrum. Essentially a walking mountain, it is an absolutely enormous sauropod which has developed armored plates of bone protrusions all over its body.

Known Information

Between these plates and its unparalled size, Titanosaurus is extremely difficult to put down. In addition, Titanosaurus seems outright immune to any sort of narcotic effects. They often inadvertently crush nearby creature underfoot with every step they take. While most sauropods ignore non-hostile creatures, Titanosaurs take issue with creatures invading its personal space. This is probably because they aggressively feed off any and all plants they can find. Titanosaurus eats constantly, which certainly helps recover health quickly, even after fighting off numerous carnivores such as Giganotosaurus.

Domesticated

I suspect that a Titanosaur, for all its sheer size, is overkill for a lone rider. Rather, for those elite tribes powerful enough to bend one of these titans to their will, the epic creature is employed as a mobile superfortress, capable of ferrying obscene amounts of weight, structures, defenses, and creatures across the island. Some nomadic tribes even have their main base on the back of a Titanosaur!

Behavior

Jeremy Twitter The dynamics of how it exists on the ARK in the wild is unlike every other natural creature. More like a raid boss of sorts ;)
~ Jeremy[3]

The Titanosaur is a fairly peaceful creature. Even if approached by a survivor on a mount, Titanosaurus is content with roaming the land in search of food. However, their wandering nature causes them to easily deforest an area, which is a mixed blessing. So long as Titanosaurus is not attacked, it will not harm anybody. Yet if attacked, it will turn into a fearsome and deadly foe, even its weakest attacks cause phenomenal damage. Seemingly a "neutral party", Titanosaurus, in self-defense, will even kill other herbivores in the wild caught in its crossfire. It's best to keep track of the location of any nearby Titanosaurus, in case it needs to be redirected from settlements.

Appearance

The gargantuan Titanosaurus is aptly named - nothing else on the island approaches it in size, and with its thick bony armor, even juveniles cannot be confused for other, smaller sauropods. Dwarfing even the largest Giganotosaurus (its only potential predator), it fears virtually nothing and goes wherever it wants, forcing smaller creatures to scatter at its approach. Due to their enormous dietary requirements, titanosaurs are almost always solitary, feeding around the clock to fuel their immense bodies. These things are like a walking mountain!

This section displays the Titanosaur's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Titanosaur. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Titanosaur will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Titanosaur's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Titanosaur's "body" magenta.

Base Stats and Growth

Titanosaurs naturally spawn at level 1-5 based on server difficulty and cannot gain additional levels. They can be admin spawned at higher levels, but they do not gain any additional stats. Still, its base stats are quite formidable.

Taming

NOTE - On official servers and by default on others, only 3 Titanosaurs can exist at once on The Island and they can not be fed once tamed, rendering them temporary tames.

Jen Twitter Cannons or catapult boulders to the head are the most efficient!
~ Jen about taming Titanosaur[4]

The Titanosaur isn't tamed with food or narcotics. To knock out the Titanosaur, you must attack its head with a Catapult Turret Catapult Turret, Ballista Turret Ballista Turret (note: ballista bolts currently seem to not work, as there have been reports of players nearly killing the Titanosaurs they attempt to tame using them, before switching to a catapult turret instead), Rocket Turret Rocket Turret (be extremely careful), or Primitive Cannon Primitive Cannon. It will gain torpor from this. When it becomes unconscious, you can access the inventory and place a saddle on it, which will instantly tame it. On official servers, the Titanosaur is a temporary tame and placing the saddle will start the countdown of 16–20 hours before it starves.

Note that the values are for optimal cases, always bring extra supplies!
For a level-dependent count of resources needed, try an external taming calculator.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[5]

Titanosaur

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Preferred Food

The Titanosaur cannot be fed on Official Servers. It can be fed on unofficial servers, but this requires using a launch command when starting the server: ?AllowRaidDinoFeeding=true. Unless this is toggled to true, the Titanosaur only needs the saddle to be tamed. No food is necessary once it is knocked out.

This list only applies, if the beforementioned parameter is set on an unofficial server.

In Single Player you can add AllowRaidDinoFeeding=true in Steam\SteamApps\common\ARK\ShooterGame\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor\GameUserSettings.ini at the end of [ServerSettings] Section.

KO Strategy

Taming a Titanosaur is very hard and should only be attempted with the help of several tribe mates.

  • Shooting Cannon Balls at its head is the best way to apply torpor. Other types of ammunition (Rockets, Boulders etc.) also work, but aren't as efficient. Be careful with how much damage you do and only aim for the head. It is recommended to have at least two people attacking the Titano's head at the same time.
  • When angered, the Titanosaur can destroy all nearby structures and animals that aren't Giganotosaurus Giganotosaurus in seconds. It is strongly advised to attack from on top of a Quetzalcoatlus equipped with a Platform Saddle to stay out of reach of the Titanosaurs attack.
  • The Titano makes a specific animation (and sound) when hit in the head AND torpor is applied, it is different from the default 'hurt' animation. This makes it easier for you to see if you're making progress or not.
  • You cannot under any circumstances trap a Titano for the purposes of taming. It will stop taking torpor damage if you attempt to exploit it by getting it stuck. The Titano must travel or it will stop taking torpor, so kite it for a bit and then try hitting it in the head again.
  • It is recommended having another tribe mate with a Magnifying Glass handy to watch the torpor, so you know when exactly it stops taking torpor.
  • It is recommended to bring parachutes in the event that the Titanosaur's body clips through your Quetzal's body, and knocks you off.
  • It is recommended to bring plenty of raw meat, as your Quetzal will most likely run out of stamina at least once during this endeavor.

Also be warned that since the Titanosaur is primarily used as a short term weapon of mass destruction, rival tribes that notice you are taming one will likely consider it an act of war and attempt to stop you. Be prepared to fend them off while also keeping track of the Titanosaur. It is recommended to enlist in the entire tribe so they can assist and help. Taming the creature is a struggle by itself, but enemy mounts can make it nearly impossible. Keep an eye out for enemy flying mounts, especially Quetzals mounted with rocket and machine gun turrets. These weapons can ruin the taming session and cause horrendous setbacks in terms of production of resources for the tribe. The enemy tribe may begin to tame the Titanosaur as well. Often times, whichever side employs more players, the greater the victory. Additionally, whichever side claims the Titanosaur receives the in-game version of an "Ace Card," which spells doom for all tribes on the server.

Combat

This section describes how to fight against the Titanosaur.

General

Don't try to fight it unless fully prepared with quetzals equipped with turrets (cannons and ballistas), as well as high level dinos such as gigas.

A wild Titanosaur on its own is dangerous, but not nearly as dangerous as a tamed Titanosaur fully outfitted for war. The strategy adopted here will largely depend upon the design of the fortress and the armaments it possesses. Bear in mind that enemies will have numerous weapons, and possibly have multiple beds inside for easy respawning should they be killed in combat. If possible, killing the riders and destroying their beds may be preferable to trying to kill the Titanosaur itself. Without a pilot, one can attempt to draw the Titanosaur away from one's own base. Be sure to take care of different enemy mounts. A tribe who has claimed the Titanosaur is more than capable to tame other creatures which will work in cahoots with the Titan to eradicate the opposition.

Strategy

Use heavy weapons at long range, preferably turrets on platform saddles so that they can evade the Titanosaur. Very strong dinosaurs can defeat the Titanosaur but it is capable of fighting five tamed level 120 Giganotosaurus. One hit from the Titanosaur will break structures on a quetzal's back. Be wary when distancing the weaponry from the animal, as it is surprisingly fast.

You can actually kill the Titanosaur with just 3 Allosauruses. Hit the Titanosaur with the strongest Allosaurus, then run away. 1 hit from pack leader Allosaurus will cause the Titanosaur to bleed for approximately 11000 damage. Just rinse and repeat for just a few minutes and the Titanosaur will almost be dead. Then shoot it with RPG to grant the full xp to your survivor, or continue finishing it off with the Allosaurus to grant them xp, although be aware that if it dies from the bleeding effect, it's possible no xp will be given. If one wishes to do the latter, it would be wise to have another tribe mate watch the fight from a close distance while mounting a dino that needs to be leveled, as that mounted dino will also get a large chunk of the xp. This is a great way to level flyers.

Weaponry

Titanosaurs are extremely difficult to kill, even with a Giganotosaurus. However, a large tribe and lots of turrets could possibly take it on. With its massive health pool, only the strongest weapons and turrets will do any significant damage against it. Using other dinos is quite risky, as the Titanosaur will always tower over them. Titanosaurus hit for about 1550. A wild Titanosaurus will rear up on their hind legs and stomp forward.

Dangers

Capable of taking down even the largest of dinosaurs. Even the mighty Giganotosaurus Giganotosaurus is no match. Smaller and weaker dinosaurs can be easily crushed underfoot, as well, just by walking over them. It is also able to destroy even metal structures with ease, so artificial pens are not viable. No force in the game can stop it from moving where it chooses to go.

Weakness

The Titanosaur is surprisingly hard to keep up with on foot, even though they are very large and are frequently assumed to be slow at first glance. Tamed Titanosaurs are also very susceptible to fall damage and drowning. The Titanosaur, despite its size, struggles to walk over large rocks.

A titanosaur cannot attack while swimming, thus one could lure a wild one to deep ocean and ambush it with tamed Plesiosaurs and Mosasaurus in order to kill it with minimal cost for the experience (as long as it doesn't die to drowning first).

Utility

Jen Twitter It would be near impossible to tame by yourself, but its larger purpose is for pvp use
~ Jen about Titanosaur uses[6]

Roles

The Titanosaur's primary purpose is to serve as a siege weapon for attacking enemy bases. Its massive platform saddle easily allows for the construction of a sizeable fortress filled with turrets and providing ample cover for attackers. Its massive health pool and its sheer dominance over smaller dinos means that it will not be easy for defenders to put down.

The Titanosaur is also the only animal capable of destroying metal structures and can smash Metal Foundation Metal Foundation in only 11 attacks, making them phenomenal at razing bases to the ground (Note however that the dino will typically run out of stamina before they can completely destroy a metal building; but they're great at finishing off already weakened structures). Plant Species X Plant Species X is effectively worthless and it would take a significant number of Auto Turret Auto Turret to stand a chance at repelling a full health Titanosaur unscathed. The only sure way to defend against a Titanosaur's stomp attack is to build on a tall rock that's inaccessible without a flyer (e.g. the Volcano or the rock formation in the Southern Islets). Note that this still leaves you vulnerable to whatever weapons are mounted on the beast, especially if the rock is about the same height as the Titanosaur's back.

The Titanosaur is strong enough to take on a wild Giganotosaurus.

Collectibles

Titanosaur does not collect resources, but can destroy trees.

Spotlights

Notes/Trivia

For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Titanosaur, see the relevant Wikipedia article.

  • The Dossier was released on 1/19/16.[7]
  • The name "Vagacastrum" means "wandering castle", fitting for this one-dino mobile fortress.
  • The Island currently only spawns 3 Titanosaurs at once, so 3 tamed ones would ultimately block any more wild ones from spawning.
  • Titanosaur is the only dino that produces the Massive Animal Feces.
  • Wild Giganotosaurus will not attack wild or tamed Titanosaurus.
  • Titanosaurus' body contains no loot.
  • Titanosaurus is too large to fit through even a Behemoth Gate.
  • The Titanosaur cannot be transferred between ARKs.
