ARKs are space stations posing as artificial, self-sustainable environments in ARK: Survival Evolved.

Lore[edit | edit source]

In the 22nd century, The United Republic of Earth (URE) and the Terran Federation (Feds), two identical futuristic super powers on Earth, launched a full-scale Tek war to see who is the better faction. However, both sides ended up weakening themselves and Element, a substance both used during their war, had grown to critical masses and alarming growth rates. As a result, Element spreads across the planet, and natural disasters ravage the planet and destroy the inhabitants present. In the aftermath, very few landmarks and monuments remain intact with veins of Element spreading and growing abnormally faster. One notable landmark that remains intact is the city of Sanctuary of Extinction. This is summarized in Helena's abstract dream in her Extinction explorer note #25 about a purple figure ripping a red molten heart from another stone figure. When the heart stopped beating, shadows rose from the purple figure and began to destroy everything.

ARKs are space stations intended to house living organisms such as Humans, Creatures, and Plants. These ARKs were sent up prior to a global-level extinction event in which Element wiped out the Humans.

When a certain signal is given from the Earth through a strange Tek machine via a Specimen Implant, this causes all ARKs to slowly descend onto earth, forming a giant seed that blooms over the Earth's wasteland, turning it into a blooming environment that it once was before the global-level extinction event, and eventually rid the raw, corrupt Element that has overgrown over it.

Every single ARK is descending onto Earth, including the Aberrant ARK with Rockwell and a station full of corrupt Element. From that point, Rockwell somehow manages to hack the Genesis Simulation to gather an army. Only thing left unknown is the significance of Arat Prime.


ARKs are powered by the Obelisk, and each ARK contains at least one Guardian. In game, the power of the obelisks are shown in the Extinction ending cutscene when the obelisks and their station released enough energy to cause a shockwave that levels the nearby remains of the city of Sanctuary. The obelisks beginning to shine brightly is similar to what happened in the Scorched Earth city of Nosti as both Raia and John Dahkeya notice that the obelisks are shining brighter than normal, and humming with more energy at a much greater intensity before the city sank into the sand.

Homo Deus[edit | edit source]

Homo Deus are beings created to watch over the ARKs. According to HLNA, they are energy-based beings who live in another reality and were an option of escape for humanity. The Homo Deus were instead integrated into the ARKs. These beings can rarely resurrect Humans. A noteable one, The One Who Waits/Helena, guides the survivor through The Island, Scorched Earth, and Aberration to Extinction. With Element prolonging the ARK's time in orbit, this caused the Homo Deus to lose themselves. Helena is the last Homo Deus whose mind hasn't crumbled yet. While being all powerful and all-knowing, Homo Deus have other abilities:

  • Being able to see the entire universe behind what Helena describes to be a pane of glass
  • Can see millions upon millions of images in the highest detail possible.
  • Overall, their ability to see so much at the same time helped those who built the ARKs.
  • Have power that tends to the ARKs in which all of them share to balance all of them.
  • Can interact with the physical world by touching survivor's minds and making things to help them. Helena leading Diana Altaras to Mei Yin and making HLNA are perfect examples.
  • Have the ability to be present in many places at once.
    • After Helena ascended to Homo Deus, Helena had been present in many places at once
      • Helena doesn't know how much time has passed while testing on survivors in the ARKs so they can cheat death.
      • Helena has been guiding Mei Yin and Diana to Arat Prime.
      • Helena had been guiding the player all the way down to Extinction.
      • Helena appears in front of the survivor and somewhere else on Earth where the sun is rising since the player sees the sun is setting.

Unexpectedly, once a survivor kills the King Titan, the Homo Deus granted that survivor their status to become a Homo Deus for their actions even though the One Who Waits or Helena says they closed the gate to Homo Deus a long time ago.

In Genesis, HLNA notices that the Homo Deus technically don't exist in the physical world anymore and have their own plane of reality, a reality Helena describes that few can ever reach. Even Helena suddenly disappeared for an unknown reason.

Genesis Simulation[edit | edit source]

The Genesis Simulation was one of the many ecosystem environment simulations in the future. Even though the Genesis Simulation was virtual, it served as a firm foundation of the ARKs. Many of the technology and creatures in the virtual world were soon adopted by those who built the ARKs.

  • Mind transfer was a prominent concept that the Genesis Simulation mastered.
    • The mind transfer required manipulating a survivor's engrammic matrix, a brain organ that can somehow store a person's personality and memories for many years long after the body has died.
      • This enables the simulation to take a survivor's mind in and out of bodies.
      • In the ARKs, mind transfer is applied to how the tech gestates humans throughout history into a perfect carbon copy of their past selves with most of their memories intact.
      • According to Diana Extinction Explorer Note #2, there is a tidbit of info about how science in the supposed 22nd century of the ARK universe is now capable of creating human clones without the need of human fertilization and the new technology called DNA webbing is a new breakthrough at the time when the magazine was written on March 2134.
    • It was also used to transform certain humans into Homo Deus.
    • People could also edit their own minds. In theory, it seems great but was terrible in a practical sense because the subjects and patients who participated couldn't stop editing themselves to a point they have nothing left. This results in the creators of the Genesis Simulation to have the entire mind of a person intact once they enter the simulation.
  • Dinosaurs appearing in the Genesis Simulation explains the origins of the dinosaurs on the ARKs.
    • The dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals are all virtual animal test subjects that the ARK creators decided to add to the ARKs.
    • The animals in the Genesis Simulation had no primal instincts wired in their brains, explaining their unwavering obedience to humans once they become tamed. HLN- refers to any animal's instincts as cheat codes as in real life, they are nearly impossible to tame and control because of their instincts.
    • With the simulation, the creators seemed to have rooted out every animal's instincts from the safety of working outside the simulation and behind a computer. From there, they know how to build a dinosaur without instincts that can make it turn on their masters at a whim.
  • Anti Contamination codes are embedded in the simulation to separate all of its biomes from mixing with one another. This soon applies to the Proto ARKs and the ARKs that are still up in orbit.
  • Simulations like it arose by not only in the second generation of simulations, but also a need where simulations are becoming more prevalent as learning environments for people of many backgrounds.
  • HLN-A fixes a glitch where she finds the sentence "A’ole no e lawa ka makaukau ma ho’okahi wale no olelo" or "one language is never enough" to find many languages embedded in the message. This could be the precursor of how survivors of various backgrounds can understand someone who talks with a different language.
  • Code was built into the Genesis Simulation to separate its 5 biomes from contaminating one another. This is soon applied to how the ARKs have a barrier, but took years to perfect in the physical world.

Proto-ARKs[edit | edit source]

With the Genesis Simulation technology near perfection, the creators of the ARK move to phase 2: making the actual ARKs by testing with proto-ARKs. Proto-ARKs can be found on Extinction and are prototype ARKs. Unlike the environments that were sent up into space, Human and Creatures can freely enter and leave the Proto-ARKs. When entering or leaving, a de-materialization effect will occur. They also have a prototype obelisk in their center that powers the ARK. Those obelisks helped the builders of the ARK to figure what will power the ARKs while they are in orbit. The only problem the Proto-ARKs have is a dome that allows creatures to walk in and out of the ARKs. This was solved by making the dome strong enough to prevent creatures from getting in or out.

3 Proto-ARKs can be found throughout Extinction, two of which are operational:

The Crater Forest was a failed experiment. This underground forest was formerly an operational, forest-themed Proto-ARK but sunk into the ground. It seems to have no borders. This implies that the ARKs need a boxed in area.

The Desert Dome was an experiment that had improvements since the ARK now has a metal ring, a circular area, but has a massive hole and some ARK structures being exposed. This might imply that the ARKs need solid ground that has very few cave systems underneath it.

The Snow Dome was an experiment that might be the foundation of all the ARKs since it has no exposed structures, few cave systems, and holes. Now all that is left for building the ARKs is making the barrier far sturdier so survivors can't exit, more, larger obelisks to power the ARK, a wider area for the ARK and systems that can carve, and move the chunk of land up and safely down orbit.

Arat Prime[edit | edit source]

This is nearly everything we currently know about Arat Prime:

An unknown location that is on the other side of Earth, Arat Prime is mentioned when Diana notices many references inside the database at the bunker she and Mei Yin found. According to HLNA, Diana and Mei Yin made it to Arat Prime where they sent Helena inside the Genesis simulation to make HLNA for an unknown reason.

Arat Prime is a mostly unknown location on the opposite side of the Earth from Extinction and is referenced in various Explorer Notes and possibly referenced in the end-scene from Genesis. HLN-A Discovery #14 reads,

"'We’re pioneers, but we aren’t the first survivors to get back to Earth. Years ago, a few survivors got back -- one of whom was Helena, the survivor who made me. They saw the same devastation you’re seeing right now, and they sought their own way to escape. For Helena, that meant ascending and becoming Homo Deus -- an energy being beyond our reality. For her friends, it meant a long journey to a place called Arat Prime, where they figured out a way to beam Helena into the Genesis simulation. And then she made me!'" (HLNA Discovery #14)

By translating the ascension code found in the Tek City itself, more information was discovered. All the text involving Arat Prime found in the Tek City reads as follows,

"A7 priority communication received. Arat Prime is locked down."

"Arat Prime is locked down. Emergency launch initiating. Proceed to nearest shelter."

"Arat Prime has gone silent. Launch was not confirmed."

In her explorer notes at the bunker station, Diana notices that a lengthy amount of information about Element's properties and the Titans all reference to Arat Prime.

It is also possible that Rockwell/Master Controller knows something about Arat Prime as referenced by this Master Controller quote upon defeat,

"'Defeat me here, and you doom yourself, Survivor. Wait 'til I find you... In the world beyond...'"

The Arrival

An unknown event that will soon come to Earth in the ARK universe, Helena mentions that it will soon arrive before disappearing and according to HLN-A, the Genesis Simulation keeps participants under constant pressure to prepare them with survival skills in anticipation for the upcoming event.

  • The name "ARK" is a reference to Noah's Ark, a vessel that preserves life, according to theologists.
  • On the island after you defeat the last boss you enter Ascension and during the cut-scene you can see many arks while traveling, ultimately reaching Scorched Earth.
  • According to HLNA, the ARKs were one of the many solutions for escape from the Element corruption and war. They were the main option humans chose to escape, while the other solutions were the Genesis Program and Homo Deus.
  • When looking closely at each pillar outside the Proto-Arks, there is a prism shape. This indicates the prism symbolizes the ARKs.
  • Deus in latin means "god"
  • In Diana Explorer Note #19, she notes the ARKs are all connected by one server room and finds an ARK's current status in a slip of info:
    • Currently on cycle 235669-F
    • Are 96% capable of terraforming their surrounding area.
    • A 0.0002% Decaying Process/Cycle
    • Lost communications status with Arat Prime
    • Locked Reseed Protocol
