The Carbonemys (car-BON-eh-miss,) often simply referred to as Turtle, is a creature in ARK: Survival Evolved. They were a large prehistoric genus of turtle that lived during the Paleocene epoch in foggy swamps of Colombia, South America just a few million years after the Cretaceous Extinction. They also coexisted with Titanoboa and are portrayed as herbivores in the game in contrast to their piscivorous diet.

Basic Info[edit | edit source]

Dossier[edit | edit source]

This section is intended to be an exact copy of what the survivor Helena Walker, the author of the dossiers, has written. There may be some discrepancies between this text and the in-game creature.

NoteHelena.png
Wild

Carbonemys obibimus is one of the least aggressive creatures on the Island. Were it not for the plethora of predators on the Island, I'm quite certain that it would spend its days basking in the sun, eating, or sleeping. Carbonemys leads a simple, solitary life. Nevertheless, it seems to be one of the most peaceful animals I have yet encountered.

With its slow walking speed, the only things that keep it safe are its surprisingly fast swim speed, and its incredibly thick shell, which can absorb tremendous damage.

Domesticated

Carbonemys' swift swim rate, fairly high strength, superior shell defenses, and lack of real threat makes it an ideal armored mount for many survivors who shy away from violence. It can carry its rider to the ocean's resources at fairly high speed, and is not particularly dangerous to tame.

~ Helena

Behavior[edit | edit source]

Carbonemys is a neutral creature, and will fight back only if attacked or you take one of their eggs. They will also defend their own kind. Upon being attacked, Carbonemys can deliver quite a punishing attack, but nothing too fatal. Their extremely low movement speed allows them to be easily kited and killed for meat early on, however they have a very large amount of health, and require quite an amount of time to kill.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Carbonemys are large turtles that often stand taller than a Human. Slow and usually placid, they are protected by one of the toughest shells on the island, in which they can draw back almost completely. The shell is armed with spiny scales. The skin of feet and tail is enhanced by firmer dander. Only the lower neck area is relatively tender. Their pine strips can be used as a cutting tool. They have small but alert and often piercing eyes, most commonly red.

Color Scheme and Regions[edit | edit source]

This section displays the Carbonemys's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Carbonemys. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Carbonemys will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.

This information can be used to alter the Carbonemys's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID> in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6 would color the Carbonemys's "body" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up

Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding-stats with an external tool.[1]

Carbonemys

The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps

Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

Taming[edit | edit source]

For general infos about domesticating a wild creature see Taming.

KO Strategy[edit | edit source]

It is not recommended that you get into a punching match with this spiky and very well-armored beast, you'll probably lose that fight. Instead you should look to a few other methods of knocking one out. The best method would be using a Scorpion and/or Tranquilizer Arrows, but if neither are available to you, then a simple Slingshot will do the trick. Aim at the head for best results and avoid hitting the shell as it has very little effect. Note: Weapons register hits from very slightly farther away than the creature will 'react' to. (i.e. it doesn't flinch or make a noise but the hit still deals damage).

Combat[edit | edit source]

This section describes how to fight against the Carbonemys.

General[edit | edit source]

The shell of the Carbonemys reduces incoming damage by 80%, the legs and tail by 50%, and the head only takes base damage (no headshot multiplier). The Carbonemys should not be attacked anywhere but the head due to the low damage on all other parts of its body.

Strategy[edit | edit source]

The Carbonemys is fairly easily killed with a Pike, Spear, or Ranged Weapons. Even though the Carbonemys can deliver a devastating blow to anyone with lower than Chitin Armor, this is easily avoided by backing away slowly and either stabbing or shooting the head of the animal. It is not recommended to use any close range weapons, such as a Metal Sword, due to the lack of distance between the player and the Carbonemys. If stuck in a tree or rock, one could easily lance hits into its face while maintaining a safe distance. Even if free from a stuck position, it is easy to kite/train(a gaming term that means to lead an enemy around in your control) to your advantage due to the horrendously slow movement speed.

Weaponry[edit | edit source]

Any weapon with a longer range than a Metal Sword should do the trick, as the distance between the player and the Carbonemys will be large enough to avoid much damage. For lower levels, a Bow, Slingshot, or Spear should do the trick, and the same for those weapons' higher-level counterparts.

Dangers[edit | edit source]

New players should be aware that the Carbonemys is not simply a defenseless, lumbering turtle, but has a large pool of health and an efficient damage output. The creature can drag a fight out for a long time, exhausting any player that did not prepare themselves. Players with low melee damage and health may have a more difficult time taking on the Carbonemys. The Turtle's powerful jaws can deliver a devastating blow to low level players.

Weakness[edit | edit source]

The Carbonemys is slow enough that you can easily outpace it even while walking backward, making spears a very effective weapon against it, you just have to prepare a lot or you might just run away from it temporarily.

Utility[edit | edit source]

Roles[edit | edit source]

  • Tank: Excellent tank due to its high HP and natural defenses. (Level up Health)
  • Water Mount: Good mount after the Ichthy to guarantee safe passage across some land and a lot of water (Level up Movement Speed, Stamina and some Health)
  • Transport: While slow, has a very good base carrying capacity. Notably faster in water, making it good for local/water transport. (Level up Weight, Movement Speed and Stamina)
  • Damage:
  • Gatherer: Just like most other herbivores the Carbonemys is a perfect mount for gathering decent amounts of thatch and some wood, as well as a decent berry gatherer.
  • Aquatic Battle Mount: If it comes to a battle mount creature, it is not really useful on land because it is slow and can easily escape from you or take lots of damage from creatures who deal a lots of knockback which it slowly kills the turtle if it's HP is low. However, it is slightly faster on water. Because of this, the Carbonemys might be a good choice to obtain your first aquatic mount in game. While the Carnoemys may be the slowest water creature and has an attack weaker than a Megalodon and most sea creatures the turtle has relatively a large health pool. You often encounter high level Carbonemys with larger HP than high level Megalodons. If your turtle is high level with a large amounts of HP, or possibly even fully imprint than this creature itself might be one of the toughest creatures on water and possibly very hard to be killed by most underwater predators. The Carbonemys attack is slightly weaker than an Ichthyosaurus and also not very fast making it ineffective if it comes to underwater hunting. If you mostly focused on melee damage than your turtle could probably easy at handling Mantas or maybe even Megalodons while you're gathering Oil or Silica Pearls at the sea floor. It's slow speed makes it more controllable on water making the turtle able to hit creatures as much as possible. While the worst battle mount compared to other underwater/land-water creatures, this is the perfect mount for beginners who wants to obtain their first battle aquatic mounts before taming Ichthyosaurus, compared to other aquatic battle mounts besides Ichthy and Manta you need to reach mid-end game level. One thing Carbonemys has that makes him tough and nothing else: A Large Health Pool. (Focus on Health, and some Melee Damage as well and Movement Speed)
  • Combatant: If you're playing on PvP or PvE the Carbonemys has it's role as a tank, if you have a high level turtle or full imprinted turtle. You might possibly fend off enemy Raptors on your own (You will get pounced off eventually so kill it faster) and if you have a herds of High Level/Full Imprinted Carbonemys with a large HP added some melee points into it, they might become your ultimate guardian creatures and can easily handle Carno's or maybe even the T. Rex, not recommended against Spino's though especially when ridden due to it's fast attack rate and knockback if you're playing PvP.
  • Defender: The Carbonemys is the first creature to possibly obtain to serve you to be your first guardian before Triceratops to protect you and your "not made for combat" creatures like Moschops and Dodo's. Have herds of turtles with high HP could possibly defend you from most predators even the T. Rex. (For Spinosaurus, I don't know actually. Focus on Health and some Melee Damage if necessary)
  • PvP Turret Soaker: Walking backwards towards a turret will cause it to take greatly reduced damage from turrets, combined with it's high HP this makes it a very good tame to exhaust auto turret ammo. It would be best to set it on passive and leash it to a friendly tame out of sight so if you get sniped off of your mount the tortoise will run to safety.

Notes/Trivia[edit | edit source]

For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Carbonemys, see the relevant Wikipedia article.

  • Carbonemys is Greek for "Coal Turtle".
  • If you want to kill Carbonemys in the early levels (because they grant great amounts of Exp), prepare some spears, and hit it while you're moving backward, as wild Carbonemys's sprint is even slower than you moving backward, so stabbing it repeatedly till it die, also work on medium and high leveled Carbonemys as well.
  • The real Carbonemys and Titanoboa were contemporaries. They both lived in the jungle rivers of what is now Colombia 60 million years ago in swamp environments. A more realistic depiction of Carbonemys would be to see them in the Writhing Swamps in large numbers. They're not the strongest herbivores but it would still result in great conflict with the swamp's predators.
  • Carbonemys is one of the original creatures that were in the game when it released in Alpha in 2015
  • When mounted the player model grows to a VERY large size to "fit" the turtle's saddle, depending on the original player model, a player could double its size while mounted.
  • The real Carbonemys was actually a giant species of side-neck turtle reaching the size of a small car. They were also believed to be carnivorous by scientists, using their beaks to crush bones, shells, and armour from small creatures.
  • In earlier versions of the game, it was possible to stand on a wild Carbonemys that was crossing a river to avoid getting bitten to death by Megapiranhas, as a bug caused Carbonemys to go unnoticed by them.
  • Carbonemys are one of the few wild dinos that can be "ridden" by jumping on their backs.
    • However, players will slide down if Carbonemys goes in combat. Occasionally, players can get stuck inside its body.
  • Real turtles breathe air and hold their breath underwater, however Ark's Carbonemys doesn't need oxygen.
  • Real turtles are social animals that live in a group called a bale, Ark's Carbonemys is mostly seen on it's own but can be seen with other Carbonemys.
  • Real turtles have webbed feet, Carbonemys have clawed feet like a land dwelling tortoise.
  • Despite being a turtle it's incapable of retracting its limbs into its shell like the Doedicurus can.
  • Real life Carbonemys might have just a normal smooth giant shell just like other turtles and not kinda spiky like on Ark.
