The Dilophosaurus (dye-LO-fuh-SAWR-us), also shortened to Dilophosaur or even more so Dilo, is one of the dinosaurs in ARK: Survival Evolved.
Basic Info
Dossier
This section is intended to be an exact copy of what the survivor Helena Walker, the author of the dossiers, has written. There may be some discrepancies between this text and the in-game creature.
- Wild
Dilophosaurus sputatrix is a strange creature. It stands at just over half the size of known Dilophosaurs and runs from aggressors as often as it fights them. Dilophosaurus sputatrix has a few traits not common in the Dilophosaurus genus. It has a very shrill call, and a decorative ridge of skin on its neck. I believe these are used to attract mates, as well as intimidate prey and would-be predators. Instead of attacking its prey outright, Dilophosaurus sputatrix spits venom to weaken and paralyze it before moving in for the kill.
- Domesticated
Because of their shrill cry and their ability to attack intruders from range, Dilophosaurus seem most suited as "guard dogs." Due to their small size, they are not suitable as mounts.
Behavior
Dilophosaurus have a very small aggravation range, but if provoked can produce deadly strikes in a very short time, as well as blinding you with a ranged poison that it will initially use before biting. Unlike other predators, the Dilophosaurus sometimes chooses to flee the player, making a relatively easy kill. They also do not live in packs, but can be found with 2-3 others. Dilophosaurus do not attack other dinosaurs, except for Parasaur, Pteranodon (which they usually can't catch), Dodo, and the Compy, but instead will scavenge for dinosaurs that have already been killed and consume the meat of the corpse. The Dilophosaur is a highly adaptable animal that can be seen in many environments including beaches, plains, river banks, jungles, swamps and the redwood forest.
Appearance
Dilophosaurus is a small opportunistic predator best distinguished by the twin crests on its head and the membranous frill surrounding its neck. They are found alone or in small groups throughout the island and prey upon anything smaller than themselves, though these dinosaurs are also frequent scavengers. If threatened a Dilophosaurus will erect its frill, hiss, and spit a greenish venom that stuns and blinds its target.
This section displays the Dilophosaur's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Dilophosaur. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Dilophosaur will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.
This information can be used to alter the Dilophosaur's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID>
in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6
would color the Dilophosaur's "body" magenta.

Wild Stats Level-up
Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]
The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps
Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.
Combat
General
Dilos are common on the beaches and are often one of the first carnivores to be seen by a survivor. Though relatively small, their vision-impairing spitting attack makes it difficult to fight them in the beginning. With a bit of practice of dodging and a spear it becomes easy and almost natural. By midgame, they provide an easy source of meat and hide. Occasionally, they group up in forests. Be sure to dodge their spitting attack, or the tide of battle can turn!
Strategy
Early survivors caught off guard and unprepared for a fight, can easily outrun a Dilo and live to fight another day. Try not to find a Raptor while doing so!
An approaching Dilo will typically begin its battle by spitting. You can tell they are about to spit (See Dangers) when they stand still and pull their head back. If you time it right you can jump to the side to avoid the shot and continue your beat down. After spitting, there appears to be a cool-down during which the Dilo cannot spit again while engaging in melee combat. After a period of time however, the Dilo will typically stop, pull their head back, and spit again.
Easily killed by any survivor with even a Stone Axe. Simply approach from in front and strike the head, rinse-repeat until dead. For Spears and Bows, shoot the head while backpedaling. If possible, dispatch it with a mount! The player could even send other tamed Dilos after it!
Weaponry
Spears/Pikes, since they give the ability to keep them away with the long range and knockback. Bow/Crossbow, for the range.
Dangers
They have the ability to spit a blob of green venom which slows you and decreases your visibility. This can also be shot at a player's dinos, with the same effect.
Due to the common nature, players often get mobbed by packs of Dilos on beaches, meaning more Dilos can enter the fray when the player is blinded and unaware. Effect lasts for four seconds and can stack.
Weakness
They are quite slow, not able to keep pace with a survivor who has a few points in speed. They have relatively low health, and become midday snacks for larger animals and aggressive players.
Taming
For general info about domesticating a wild creature see Taming.
KO Strategy
When taming the Dilophosaur, a slingshot is preferred for knocking it unconscious. Two to three hits on a lower level Dilophosaur will knock it out and leave just over half its health remaining. You can also punch it 5-10 times and leave almost all its health.

Utility
- Combat companion: Although the Dilophosaur is weak compared to most enemies out there, it still can save you from a critical situation at the very early game by taking a few hits for you or dealing that little bit of extra damage to kill the enemy before it does kill you. And in worst case it can keep the enemy occupied while you run. (Level health, damage)
- PvP annoyance: It is unlikely that a Dilophosaur will kill a higher level player, however it can still annoy it by blinding and slowing him. Keeping a flock of Dilophosaurs to guard your home can help stronger defenders to reach their target, or confuse the attacker to miss their target. Just don't expect them to be alive once the battle is over. (Level health exclusively)
- Indoor Guard Dogs: Unlike most other carnivores, the Dilophosaur can comfortably fit inside narrow hallways and low ceilings. Having several Dilophosaurs stationed inside a vault room along with a turret can catch many raiders by surprise, leaving them open to getting mobbed by the dinosaurs and shot by the inner turrets while blinded. This strategy is even more effective when paired with the Pegomastax. (Level health, damage, and some speed)
- Egg Farm: Dilophosaur eggs are one of the earliest eggs that can be acquired easily and their kibble is used for taming Ankylosaurus and Doedicurus, both useful animals for harvesting stone and metal, as well as powerful combat and transport mounts. The kibble is also the favourite of Pachys, which are excellent for lightweight cavalry and early battering rams.
Notes/Trivia
For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Dilophosaur, see the relevant Wikipedia article.
- Dilophosaurus venom will slow other dinosaurs, thereby making them suitable companions when taking down fast moving animals, or fleeing from the more dangerous ones.
- Dilophosaurus are easier to kill compared to other dinosaurs and can serve as a source of food in critical situations.
- In their stomach inventory, they will rarely drop Nerdry Glasses Skin, a reference to Dennis Nedry from the movie Jurassic Park, who wore these glasses while being killed and eaten by a Dilophosaurus.
- Ark: Survival Evolved utilizes the pop-culture version of this dinosaur, a small venom-spitting theropod dinosaur, when in reality the Dilophosaurus was a theropod capable of reaching twenty feet (6 meters) in length. Further, there is no scientific evidence they could shoot venom or were venomous at all nor of a neck frill. This discrepancy is noted in the dossier.
- The name of the Dilophosaur is derived from the Greek words di (δι) meaning "two", lophos (λόφος) meaning "crest", and sauros (σαυρος) meaning "lizard"; thus means "two-crested lizard".
