The Dragon is one of the Bosses in ARK: Survival Evolved.
In Survival of the Fittest, the Dragon will appear on the center platform about halfway through the match and will be available for taming. The Dragon will only be rideable for a short time before it will turn on its master.[1]
Contents
Appearance[edit | edit source]
The Dragon is one of the six Bosses which can be fought in their respective Boss Arenas, accessible from Beacons and Obelisks. In the main game, it is not tamable, unless certain commands are used.
Color Scheme and Regions
The Dragon used to spawn with an extremely diverse range of colorization, however this was changed during the development of the Dragon's Boss Arena.
The Dragon always spawns with the same color scheme and has no color regions.
This means it is currently impossible to make alterations to the Dragon's natural spawn colors.
Colors[edit | edit source]
The Dragon has different colors depending on its difficulty level:
Difficulty Level | Color |
---|---|
Gamma | Green |
Beta | Yellow |
Alpha | Red |
Dragon - Ragnarok Arena (Variant)[edit | edit source]
The following are variants of the Dragon that are found in the Ragnarok Arena. The variant summoned is dependent on the difficulty of the Arena. These Dragons have lower Health.
Basic Information[edit | edit source]
Location[edit | edit source]
The Dragon can only be found in the Dragon Arena. To reach this location, players must go to either a Beacon or Obelisk and place the required tribute items inside, then click on the Generate Dragon Portal item. At this point a portal will be opened to teleport nearby players and dinos into the arena.
If playing in Single Player mode, the portal can only be generated from the Red Obelisk.
Note: The Dragon Boss has less health and damage resistance compared with Official Servers
Tribute Requirements[edit | edit source]

The firebreath-attack yields up to 2000 damage (probably depending on the amount of flames the target is covered with) and is applied over a time of 10s. The flame-damage is not affected by the Melee Damage-Stat and thus cannot be increased by level-ups.
Taming[edit | edit source]
The Dragon can not be tamed except in Survival of the Fittest. After tamed, Dragon will disappear after 20 - 40 Minutes, use it wisely.
Resources[edit | edit source]
Preferred Food
Note that the values are for optimal cases, always bring extra supplies!
For a level-dependent count of resources needed, try an external taming calculator.
Collectibles[edit | edit source]
Notes/Tips[edit | edit source]
- In SotF, the Dragon is permanently passive, and will not attack anything unless ridden.
- The Dragon cannot swim, but can walk or even fly in water.
- You can not use any kind of Tek Gear inside the Arena.
Combat[edit | edit source]
This section describes how to fight against the Dragon.
General[edit | edit source]
Please keep in mind that the Dragon is considered by many players to be the second toughest boss to defeat (Previously the hardest, but that title was overtaken by King Titan).
Most notably for constantly flying up to unreachable heights, the Dragon spits fireballs and calls creatures down to its aid, attacking would-be aggressors below it. Often at times, it will land, attempting to viciously bite and breathe fire at them. This would be where it is time to strike. But watch the steps, for the arena is teemed with flowing lava lakes that can burn anything other than itself.
Strategy[edit | edit source]
A legion of Rexes paired with a Yutyrannus or perhaps a legion of Therizinos paired with the former. Therizinos are often regarded a safer choice due to the ability to heal using Sweet Vegetable Cakes.
Weaponry[edit | edit source]
Try to attack the dragon with guns, lots of powerful tames, and a tribe with at least 5 to 10 players.
Dangers[edit | edit source]
The dangers include the fire breathing and being killed in a single bite. The fireballs he shoots are AOE so be very careful. The dimorphs that spawn in the arena will kill you even on your mount.
Weakness[edit | edit source]
The dragon is the biggest island boss and its backside is not in its hitbox. Therefore, once the dragon lands(it circles around in the air for a bit and shoots fireballs when you enter the arena), and manage to circle it with Rexes or Therizinos, you can dish out a lot of damage without endangering all of your tames. There are also ruins in the arena that the dragon sometimes gets stuck on, while it's stuck you can shoot it from afar or send your tames (Do NOT go into the fight expecting this to happen, if you're lucky it might happen but it probably won't). While the dragon is in the air, shooting it with assault rifles is the best way to deal high damage over the short period of time it is flying. While on foot and shooting, be sure to look out for the pteranadons and dimorphs that the dragon spawns, they will attack. Never go into the dragon fight without 200+% damage guns at least, primitive guns would be worthless in the dragon fight.
Spotlight[edit | edit source]
Notes/Trivia[edit | edit source]
For information pertaining specifically to the real-world Dragon, see the relevant Wikipedia article
- The Dragon is the fifth largest creature in the game (the largest being
King Titan, second being
Rockwell, followed by the Titans and finally
Titanosaur), even larger than most of the large creatures such as a Brontosaurus, a DodoRex or a Giganotosaurus.
- Admin spawned dragons despawn 20 minutes after taming.
- Its purple and orange color scheme may be a reference to the Spyro franchise.
- In the Creature's dossier it looks bigger than the Titanosaur, though this is inaccurate. This can be explained by the fact that dragon boss in early access was about 15% bigger, than now. Moreover, initial dragon in the first EA trailer was about 1.5 times bigger than titanosaur. Since mid-2016, dragon boss in-game is still slightly larger, than bronto, and about 20% smaller, than titanosaur.
