The only solution I've personally found supported by devs are making sure you have Service Pack 1 installed if you're running Windows 7. This is a BIG fix for a lot of technical problems, from what I've read
Don't touch your computer while it loads.
Wait at least 5 minutes once you start to feel the hang/freeze. It may just take you awhile to load in. This is my problem, I always load in given enough time.
If you're trying to connect through Steam rather than the client, try the opposite.
If you're loading "No Sky" version, try other versions (low mem, regular boot, etc.). Also, try a different version if you're using regular version (such as low mem, no sky)
Verify game cache/files through Steam
Make sure your graphics drivers are updated
Is your anti-virus going dumdum? Check to see if it's blocking/quarantining anything. False positives are a thing, though unlikely
Clear your %TEMP% files
