The Carbon is a Resource in the Primitive+-DLC of ARK: Survival Evolved.

Gathering

Carbon is gathered from obsidian rocks with a pickaxe. While any pickaxe can gather Carbon, the Obsidian Pickaxe harvests it at a significantly higher rate, at the cost of not harvesting any Obsidian.

Crafting

2 Carbon and 1 iron ingot can be combined in a Refining Forge to produce Steel Ingots, which are used in crafting many weapons and structures.

Notes

• As of January 2 it is not possible to gather Carbon from Obsidian nodes with any pickaxe except in the snow biome Obsidian nodes with an Obsidian Pickaxe on The Island Map. A doedicurus will gather a large amount of carbon from metal nodes, but the carbon weight is not reduced in doedicurus's inventory.
