The Crossbow is an advanced hunting tool. It is the upgraded version of the Bow Bow. Every shot from the Crossbow is fully charged and deals more damage, but takes slightly longer to reload than the Bow. It is not as efficient as a Longneck Rifle with Tranquilizer Darts for increasing a creature's Torpor, at least in terms of Torpor per Damage (TPD), but deals higher Torpor per Second (TPS) if successfully firing at its maximum firing rate of 0.383 RPS.

Usage[]

When loaded with Stone Arrows, the Crossbow can be used as a ranged weapon to hunt and kill other players or creatures.
When loaded with Tranq Arrows, it can be used to knock other players or creatures unconscious. Since the torpor delivered by a Tranq Arrow scales with damage, it raises the target's torpor by a higher amount than an arrow shot from the Bow.
Most creatures will take about 2.5 times as much damage if you shoot them in the head. Torpor gain from Tranquilizer Arrows does scale with this boost.

Flying creatures take 1.5x damage from non-bullet ranged weapons.

The Crossbow can also be fired underwater, making it an ideal choice for hunting or taming underwater creatures such as a Megalodon, Plesiosaur, Mosasaurus, or Dunkleosteus.

Notes/Tips[]

  • Although the damage output of the Crossbow is high, its slow attack speed results in a low damage per second (see info box) against unarmored targets for Stone Arrows. This is half as much as a Pike Pike provides.
  • Damage caps at 755.3% and Durability caps at 1738.
  • Like the Bow, arrows fired from the Crossbow can be recovered by walking over the area of impact. However, they will be recovered as Stone Arrows, regardless of which type of arrow was fired. The arrows will sometimes break on impact or despawn before you can get to them, so they are not always recoverable.
  • The crossbow is a highly resource-efficient weapon due to using cheap, field-craftable Stone Arrows as ammunition. Combined with the utility factor of being able to fire underwater, consider keeping a crossbow in your hotbar to use on slower and/or weaker opponents(and in case you unexpectedly find yourself fighting aquatic enemies) and saving a more effective but costlier firearm or other higher-tier weapon for tougher opponents.
  • It is reasonable to assume all higher tier players will carry one at all times. It may also be the most common weapon, other than the pick or axe. It is also easily one of the most efficient weapons.
