The Giganotosaurus (jig-a-NOT-o-SOR-us meaning "Giant Lizard") one of the Dinosaurs in ARK: Survival Evolved.
Basic Info
Dossier
- Wild: Giganotosaurus furiosa is an enormous predator, larger even than the Tyrannosaurus or Spinosaurus. While greater in size than those storied predators, it can be somewhat less dangerous when encountered in the wild, due to its sluggish speed. Even still, getting cornered or run down by a Giganotosaurus means certain death for nearly any creature.
- Domesticated: Taming Giganotosaurus is a dangerous prospect. Its rage reaction, even when tamed, can sometimes cause it to briefly turn on members of its own tribe. Indeed it may even throw off its rider if it has been sufficiently angered! And yet, the sheer size and immense power that the Giganotosaurus possesses means that some factions endeavor to tame it as a fear-inducing "capital" beast of war—even at great risk!
- Known Information: Fighting a Giganotosaurus directly is never a good idea, as its rage rapidly grows with every hit it takes. With this rage, it builds increasing reserves of energy to use, making its iron-jawed bites progressively more deadly and enhancing its stamina. Add to this the fact that its huge body enables it to take a tremendous amount of punishment, and you have a creature that is generally better avoided or outsmarted than attacked head-on.
Behavior
Giganotosaurs will 'casually' stroll about the Island, slaughtering anything in their path, this can lead them to wander to just about anywhere on the Island. Their lack of natural predator, or, really, any form of threat to them, allows for their safe voyages across the Island. Beware.
The Giganotosaurus is an aggressive creature. Due to its rage mechanic, it will get angrier when being attacked, which makes its attacks deal more damage. Also, it regains stamina faster when enraged. If it builds up too much rage, it can kick players riding it off of it and attack them.
Its rage mechanic is not a health-percentage based trigger, it only occurs if enough damage occurs quickly enough. It will also trigger even if the server is set to the friendliest possible PvE and no friendly-fire settings, in which normally it is not possible to hurt anything not wild.
While its dossier implies that it is sluggish and slow, it is anything but that. Due to its large stride, allowing it to walk over most obstacles, and naturally high movement speed, the Giganotosaurus can outrun just about anything on the island. Combined with its very large aggro range this means it is a fast and dangerous predator.
Appearance
Giganotosaurus is an enormous and ill-tempered predatory dinosaur. Akin to a Tyrannosaurus but larger, spikier, and with more powerful grasping arms, this creature feeds mainly on Brontosaurs (which it is nearly as large as) but will kill and eat virtually anything it can catch. Its short temper means that (thankfully) it is a solitary hunter and is thus very rare. When enraged, the eyes glow flame yellow.
Giganotosaurus is currently the largest non-boss land carnivore in-game.
This section displays the Giganotosaurus's natural colors and regions. For demonstration, the regions below are colored red over an albino Giganotosaurus. The colored squares shown underneath each region's description are the colors that the Giganotosaurus will randomly spawn with to provide an overall range of its natural color scheme. Hover your cursor over a color to display its name and ID.
This information can be used to alter the Giganotosaurus's regions by entering cheat SetTargetDinoColor <ColorRegion> <ColorID>
in the cheat console. For instance, cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6
would color the Giganotosaurus's "body" magenta.
Breeding and Incubation
For breeding you can build 4 behemoth gates in a square. The incubation takes 50 h, but is straightforward if you have at least eight to ten Air Conditioners.

Wild Stats Level-up
Type in values of a wild creature to see on which stats it's emphasized. Green values on a high-level creature are very good for breeding. If you have already tamed your creature you can try to recover the breeding stats with an external tool.[1]
The stat-calculator does not work in the mobile-view, see here for alternatives: Apps
Note that after the creature is tamed it gets bonuses on some stats depending on the taming effectiveness. This makes it hard to retrieve the levels on a tamed creature, so this tool is only for wild ones, but gives a first impression, how well the stats are distributed.

KO Strategy
Although this strategy is rather difficult, the best method would be to utilize a creature of flight such as an Argentavis and carry another player over the creature until sufficiently tranquilized. Any other method is highly dangerous given its massive size and high damage. You could also try to lure one close to a high cliff and just shoot it from up there, just make sure it wont be able to hit you. Aim at the head for best effect. Be warned, Giga spawn locations are often filled with other hazardous predators.
Another way of taming a Giganotosaurus is to form a square out of 8 Steel Behemoth Gateways with the Giga inside. Once the Giga is trapped you can knock it out from a safe distance without risking your dinosaur or yourself. If the Giga loses Torpor too quickly you can just knock it out again. Be wary when you enter the cage for it may wake up and kill you.
One of the easiest ways to tame the Giganotosaurus (works if you are by yourself too) is to use a Quetzal with a Quetz Platform Saddle to hover above the dino at a distance you cannot be attacked. Then you are free to unload tranq arrows into its face while it glares angrily at you. Just make sure you don't stop too low! Since Giganotosaurus' Torpor decreases at very high rates its recommended to keep it under constant fire without any interruption. Two or more people firing constantly proves to be successful.
Another super easy way to tame Giganotosaurus is to build a room out of Metal Dinosaur Gateways (no gates needed), leaving one side open, and put a Large Bear Trap in the middle. You then lure the Giganotosaurus in so that he'll get stuck in the bear trap, then fill in the remaining wall with another Metal Dinosaur Gateway. The Giga will be unable to escape the enclosure and you can shoot at him until he's down. A similar method that uses ramps around an 3 wall high enclosure is shown in this video.
If, by some miracle, a player or a group of players on the ground manage to survive the confrontation, they must be ready for the second phase in the knock out process: the chase. The Giga will sprint at an insanely fast pace away from the battle. From there, the player or players must do everything humanly possible to track it down and continue the fight. While the player/players close the gap, the Giga will prey on any animal in sight. This will regain its health, and undoubtedly bring the Giga back to full consciousness, from where the process will surely repeat. One method to combat this is rather costly, but gets the job done. If one player or more keep the Giga focused on them, the other players can quickly lay down metal walls and trap the Giga. Then the tame becomes similar to shooting a fish in a barrel.
Even with the Giga immobilized and knocked out, the fight is not over. If anything, it has just moved on to the second stage. Now the player/players must battle the Torpor system. The torpor in a Giga is a large number, but the number that it drops is even more astounding. A level five specimen will awake within less than two minutes. This is where teamwork with other players or extreme solo skill come into play. As a team, split the jobs before taking the Giga down so that the process can flow smoothly when the Giga is unconscious. Optimally, four to five players should be helping. One must CONSTANTLY be in the Giga's inventory monitoring the tame meter and the Torpor meter. They are the vital role: keeping the process going and ensuring the Giga does not wake and resume its merciless killing spree. Another player must be used beforehand, and is in charge of taking the Giga down. All the team members can help with this stage, but they all must be doing their separate jobs when the Giga is out. The fighter, upon KO, turns into the resource manager. He/she watches over the supplies like the stacks of Narcotic and Raw Prime Meat. They must notice when supplies are low. It is their call to abandon the tame, or to send a party out for new resources. Another player acts as a transfer system, delivering the goods from the resource manager to the active tamer. While this happens, one or more players should watch the area around them. Other dinosaurs roam, and a Rex, Carno, Alpha predator of any kind, or even another Giga could arrive and ruin everything. Solo players must do this all on their own. Solo, it is nearly impossible. For a solo tame, an animal must be used to carry the Narcotics necessary.
The payoff for this extreme task, however, is worth it. The Giga is the most powerful dino in the game, and can be devastating on public servers. But if it goes into rage mode it will throw you off the saddle turn on you and all your dinosaurs.
Combat
This section describes how to fight against the Giganotosaurus.
General
A Giganotosaurus in the Wild, or tamed, is extremely dangerous, simply because of it's massive speed, damage and Health.
A wild Giganotosaurus is one of the most dangerous creatures on the island, even a low level tamed Giganotosaurus can be a threatening power.
Strategy
A Wild Giganotosaurus is best avoided. If you must engage in combat, lure it to a cliff or similar object, then attack it in relative safety. If faced with a tamed Giganotosaurus, assemble your tribe and throw everything you have at it. If you lack a tribe, you will most probably not survive the attack. Giganotosaurus spawn in the proximity of other Gigas and multiple deadly carnivores. Scout the battle site before engaging in combat.
It is best to attack a Giganotosaurus from a flyer. One good strategy is to pick up a friend with an Argentavis, but be sure to bring plenty of ammunition, as it could take an hour to kill a high level Giganotosaurus. Be warned, Giganotosaurus frequently spawns in the proximity of other Argentavis, and they will attack any flying mount. If the Giganotosaurus is tamed by a smart tribe, they will most likely have flying mounts set up to protect the Giganotosaurus from the air. Do not attempt to attack a Giganotosaurus with another Giganotosaurus, then when your tamed Giganotosaurus gets raged and throws you off you will be trapped between the Gigas and will undoubtedly get killed. You can avoid this by using the 'Attack this target' from a flying or fast land mount.
As of update v226.7 you can get a Giganotosaurus to enter rage mode by only needing to fire 2-3 rocket propelled grenades at it, either from a Rocket Launcher or a Rocket Turret. Higher caliber Rocket Launchers might only require one shot.[2]
A wild Giga can also be lured easily to enemy bases or simply away from any of your tribes bases by grabbing bait-food, like a Dilo, Oviraptor or Player (since the bait doesnt have to be dropped for him to follow it, a friendly Player won´t make any problems), with a high stamina Flyer (You don't want to land with a Giga chasing you), to hover above him, soon he´ll focus on the bait, his high speed will allow him to easily follow your bait on land, in water he might fall behind and will need a new impulse.
Weaponry
A large amount of Auto Turrets can pose a major threat to the Giganotosaurus, as they can deal a lot of damage quickly. The Mini-gun and Rocket turrets can be very effective against a Giga, especially when mounted on the Quetzal.
4-6 Plant Species X can effectively push back a Giganotosaurus, but they do not do very much damage. They are ideal for keeping it at bay while another source of damage is applied or even Torpor to begin the taming process. Be careful as to not let one come from the side. It makes it take a little longer for all the plants to target and could potentially stop a plant from shooting due to line-of-sight.
Dangers
The Giganotosaurus can, and will, instantly kill all but the hardiest of dinos. This, coupled with its health reserves and its rage mechanic make it quite possibly the most dangerous dino in the game. The Giganotosaurus's torpor will drain faster than it will rise, this makes it hard to solo tame. A Crossbow is recommended due to the higher fire rate than a longneck rifle.
The Giganotosaurus can attack according to this discussion up to 8-12 foundations high and 8-10 foundations beyond a wall.
Weakness
The Giganotosaurus is very vulnerable in the water. Its low stamina and slow swim speed can cause it to drown very quickly. However, its massive size will keep it out of most water. A wild Giganotosaurus can be easily shot from a cliff, which are in abundance in the mountainous lands Gigas spawn in.
Rage Mode
Basic Information
The Giga's eyes will glow yellow and it will lose less stamina and do more damage. If it is tamed, it will throw its rider off and attack everything around it, excluding allied tamed Gigas. Any allied Gigas near an enraged allied Giga will instantly enter rage mode, causing a sort of domino effect that can be devastating.
Cause
Taking too much damage too fast (Usually caused by fall damage)
Utility
- When Tamed and ridden, do not fall from great heights because this will cause it, most of the time, to go enraged (and then proceed to kill you). The best thing to do when you notice that you are falling from a great height is to sacrifice yourself and jump off of the Giganoto. Because unmounted dinos don't take any fall damage, it won't get angered. You can set the Giga on follow and ride another dinosaur, preferable a flying mount to escape and rage reactions. Be sure to protect your Giga from the air, as other tribes will attempt to shoot it from flying mounts.
Roles
- Tank: With inherently high HP and base damage, Giganotosaurus is long lasting. Just as long as you watch its Rage, you will last with it. (Increases in Damage, Health, and Stamina when/if needed)
- Caravan: Giganotosaurus, even at lower levels, has extremely high Health and carry weight. Increases to its Weight, Speed, Damage, Stamina, and Health will make for a good carnivorous Pack-Mule. (Although this is usually a role filled by herbivores such as Brontosaurus). A Giganotosaurus caravan is almost never challenged, for obvious reasons.
- Siege Engine: As the only tameable land-based Dino capable of destroying Stone structures, It is logical to employ this beast upon your enemies. So long as it is kept calm, The Giganotosaurus can level months of work in mere minutes.

Notes/Trivia
- Its scientific name means "Furious Giant Southern Lizard".
- The dossier was revealed on 08/08/15[3]
- It was set for release on Nov. 3rd, 2015, it was then delayed until Nov. 5th, 2015
- Besides Alpha Predators and the DodoRex, it is the only land-based dino able to destroy stone structures.
- Until the Dunkleosteus' release in Patch 238.0, it was the only tameable dino that could demolish stone structures.
- The Giganotosaurus is capable of a roar ability. This makes it the third creature with the ability to roar, behind the Tyrannosaurus and the Direwolf.
- When the Giganotosaurus enters rage mode, its eyes turn bright yellow — an ominous sign to warn enemies and allies alike of its boosted damage and resistance modifiers. In this state it is a force to be reckoned with, even rivaling the power of other menacing giants like the Dragon and even DodoRex.
- Flame damage will not make a Giganotosaurus enter rage mode, which means creatures that can breathe fire, such as the Dragon, can kill it much more effectively.
- Take care when traveling over elevations; the Giganotosaurus may take fall damage and unintentionally enter rage mode, attacking everything within its radius — including its rider. Use caution when traversing hilly terrain; always unmount and set it to follow.
- As of patch 222.8, an enraged Giganotosaurus will instantly enrage any nearby allied Giganotosaurus. This makes it dangerous to have too many in the same area, as one entering rage mode will cause a chain reaction. An enraged Giganotosaurus will not attack another allied Giganotosaurus.
- The Giganotosaurus swims extremely slowly. This combined with its low stamina means it can drown very quickly if attempting to cross a large and deep body of water, its large HP will not save it. Fortunately it is tall enough that most of the time it can simply wade through.
- Note that on level 1, a Giganotosaurus is actually a lot more powerful than even an Alpha Rex or Dragon. As all three creatures progress through levels, the Giganotosaurus gains very little to each stat while the other 2 gain a lot more to their stats.
- Gigas can have trouble with rocks, making areas like snow a pain to travel with them on following. It is much easier to have a friend trail behind and break rocks for you or just simply ride it.
- Taking a Giga egg is an extremely bad idea if you're not prepared. It's best to have an extremely fast flying mount or there will be major consequences.
- It is confirmed that the Giga will have a tek tier helmet that would allow it to shoot lasers.[4]
